This fixed-dose combination antibiotic is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), bronchitis, ear infections, traveler’s diarrhea, pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), and certain skin infections. The two components work synergistically to inhibit sequential steps in bacterial folate synthesis.
- Dosage:
- Typical adult dose: 800mg SMX + 160mg TMP (1 double-strength tablet) every 12 hours for 5–14 days, depending on infection.
- For PCP prevention/treatment: As prescribed in immunocompromised patients.
- Precautions:
Avoid in patients with sulfa allergy, severe liver or kidney disease, or folate deficiency. Stay well hydrated to avoid crystalluria. Use with caution in the elderly. - Common Side Effects:
Nausea, vomiting, rash, loss of appetite. Rare: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, blood dyscrasias, hyperkalemia.
