Acyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses, including genital herpes, cold sores, shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox (varicella). It works by inhibiting viral DNA replication, thereby reducing the severity and duration of symptoms.

• Dosage:
  • Herpes zoster (shingles): 800mg five times daily for 7–10 days.
  • Genital herpes (initial episode): 400mg three times daily or 200mg five times daily for 7–10 days.
  • Suppressive therapy: 400–800mg/day in divided doses.
• Precautions: Maintain adequate hydration during treatment. Adjust dose in renal impairment. Use caution in elderly patients.
• Common Side Effects: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness. Rare: kidney dysfunction with high doses or dehydration.
