Valacyclovir (Valtrex)

Valacyclovir is a prodrug of acyclovir, used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is commonly prescribed for genital herpes, cold sores, shingles (herpes zoster), and chickenpox. Valacyclovir offers improved bioavailability compared to acyclovir, allowing less frequent dosing.

• Dosage:
  • Genital herpes (initial episode): 1000mg twice daily for 10 days
  • Recurrent outbreaks: 500mg twice daily for 3 days
  • Shingles: 1000mg three times daily for 7 days
  • Cold sores: 2000mg twice in one day (12 hours apart)
• Precautions:
  Dose adjustment required in renal impairment. Maintain adequate hydration during treatment.
  Use with caution in elderly and immunocompromised patients.
• Common Side Effects:
  Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness. Rare: kidney issues or CNS effects at high doses.
